The Annual Medieval Middle East Meeting is a yearly event in the Netherlands supported by NISIS and the Dutch Research School for Medieval Studies.
This initiative is a yearly forum for students, junior, middle-career and senior scholars to present work-in-progress that is related to the Medieval Middle East. The aim is to receive feedback, keep up to date, and build relationships across disciplines and departmental affiliations. MA and PhD students are strongly encouraged to participate and gain experience and feedback from more senior colleagues.
The conception of “Middle East” is broadly defined, to include North Africa, Central Asia, and the Mediterranean world (e.g. Andalusia). The conception of medieval likewise can be broadly defined, also including late antiquity to early modernity if it seems relevant to participants. The aim is to make linkages rather than to exclude. We meet for one day annually every autumn with hosting rotating between Universities.
This forum is designed for participation of scholars working on various disciplines including language and literature, art history, archaeology, history, religion. Contributions related to all languages relevant to the study of the medieval Middle East are encouraged, including Arabic, Persian and other Iranian languages, Hebrew, Aramaic, Syriac, Coptic, Greek, Latin, and European languages.
